The municipality of Unión Hidalgo was created on September 29, 1882.
The municipality of Union Hidalgo is one of the 570 municipalities in which the Mexican state of Oaxaca is divided. It is located in the Tehuantepec isthmus and its capital is the town of Union Hidalgo.
Due to its location, Unión Hidalgo is situated in an area that lacks elevations. Therefore, the flora is limited to grasslands, espinales, small palm groves and bushes of little consideration. It is important to emphasize that there is a great variety of wood trees such as oak, mahogany and shade trees such as pochote.
The Espiritu Santo River, which crosses the municipality and the city from north to south, is located in the eastern part. Unión Hidalgo also has a small coastal area called Playa Unión, which is approximately 15 minutes away from the town by car. The municipality has only one elevation, which is known as "Cerro Iguana".
