World Philanthropy Day is an unofficial event held on November 8th that emerged at the turn of 2020 in the university community of several Spanish-speaking countries, including Spain, Mexico (Universidad Popular Autónoma del Estado de Puebla), Colombia, and Venezuela. The day is dedicated to encouraging and recognizing the selfless and altruistic work of individuals and organizations committed to the well-being of society. Events dedicated to this theme showcase social impact projects and demonstrate commitment to all those who work daily to benefit vulnerable groups.
While there are celebrations throughout the month of November-and in some cases, throughout the year-National Philanthropy Day®, or NPD, is officially recognized on November 15. The date was first recognized in the United States by President Ronald Reagan in 1986 through a proclamation (and the hard work of philanthropist and fundraiser Douglas Freeman), and the Canadian Parliament signed a declaration in 2013 celebrating November 15 as NPD in Canada as well.
