Orthodox churches or Byzantine Orthodox churches are the pre-Reformation churches of the Byzantine rite. With around 300 million members, the Orthodox churches form the second largest Christian community in the world.
The main festival of Orthodoxy, as in all Christianity, is Easter. September is marked by the harvest and the transition to the cold season. With the beginning of the Orthodox church year on September 1, prayers are said for the preservation of creation. The new indiction also began on this day in the Byzantine Empire. Pope Francis took up this idea with the introduction of the Day of Prayer for Creation.
