The Rutenfest is an annual school and local history festival in Ravensburg with long historical roots. It features a colorful parade with costumed schoolchildren, bands and floats depicting the town's history and culture.
Ravensburg was granted its town charter in the 14th century. The Rutenfest became an opportunity to celebrate the town and strengthen the community. Originally, the rod festival was a fertility ritual in which young men beat the buttocks of girls with birch rods. This was supposed to bring good luck and fertility.
Over time, the rod festival developed into a colorful festival with parades, music and dancing. It is an important part of Ravensburg's tradition and culture. It brings people from the region together and is a highlight in Ravensburg's calendar of events.
