World Tipping Day has been celebrated annually since 2016, initiated by service industry unions, most notably the German union NGG. Its purpose is to highlight the importance of tips as a source of income and to remind customers to show gratitude to the people who make our service experiences enjoyable.

Founders: The initiative came from unions representing restaurant and catering workers, especially NGG (Gewerkschaft Nahrung-Genuss-Gaststätten) in Germany.

Reason for Creation: Unions wanted to draw public attention to the fact that tips are not just symbolic gestures of thanks, but a real part of the income for millions of service workers.
