The official birthday of the Grand Duke is celebrated as an annual national holiday of Luxembourg. It is celebrated on June 23, although it has never been the birthday of any ruler of Luxembourg. When the monarch of Luxembourg is a woman, it is called the official birthday of the Grand Duchess.
The constitution of Luxembourg defines the grand duke's position: The grand duke is the head of state, symbol of its unity, and guarantor of national independence. He exercises executive power in accordance with the constitution and the laws of the country.
The Grand Duke's regulatory power consists in taking the regulations and administrative orders required for the enforcement of laws and treaties. In some cases he may delegate this power to the members of his government. Article 74 of the Constitution provides that the Grand Duke may dissolve the Chamber of Deputies.
Luxembourg's prosperity was formerly based on steel manufacturing. With the decline of that industry, Luxembourg diversified and is now best known for its status as Europe's most powerful investment management centre.
