Defenders Day in Maryland commemorates the successful defense of the city of Baltimore from September 12-14, 1814, against invading British troops during the War of 1812. The event led to the writing of a poem, which was set to music and a few days later became known as the song "Star Ornament". It became the national anthem of the United States in 1931.
