World Zoo Elephant Day is celebrated at the initiative of the organization "For the Protection of Animals". First celebrated in 2009. World Zoo Elephant Day aims year after year to draw public attention to the problems of elephants around the world and to the rights of animals living in zoos. The ultimate goal of this day is to free the bonded giants once and for all.
In a zoo, a typical adult elephant may eat 4-5 bales of hay and 10 – 18 pounds, or 4.5 to 8 kg, of grain a day. This amounts to a yearly quantity of more than 29,000 kg of hay and 2700 kg of feed per animal, The normal daily water consumption is 25 – 50 gallons per animal, or 100 – 200 liters. As you drive past the zoos, slow down and congratulate the elephants as they celebrate World Zoo Elephant Day.
