A static charge happens when two surfaces touch each other and the electrons move from one object to another. One of the objects will have a positive charge and the other a negative charge. If you rub an object quickly, like a balloon, or your feet on the carpet, these will build-up a rather large charge.
A spark of static electricity can measure thousands of volts, but has very little current and only lasts for a short period of time. Lightning is a powerful and dangerous example of static electricity. As dangerous as lightning is, around 70% of people struck by lightning survive.
Electricity travels at the speed of light, about 300,000 kilometres per second. A spark of static electricity can measure up to 3,000 volts. The average taser emits 50,000 volts. A bolt of lightning can measure up to three million (3,000,000) volts (and lasts less than one second).
