10 October - International Pinotage Day
Pinotage is South Africa's signature red wine grape. A gutsy cross between pinot noir and cinsault rarely found anywhere else in the world, pinotage is a one-of-a-kind rustic red wine that is earthy, fruit-driven, and perfect for pairing with barbecue. It has slightly high alcohol levels for red wine.
Pinotage is a grape crossing of Cinsaut and Pinot Noir. It was first crossed in South Africa in 1925 in the gardens of scientist Abraham Perold. Perold observed how Pinot Noir struggled in South Africa's climate, so he crossed them with a very productive species: Cinsaut (called Hermitage).
Pinotage is produced in other countries than its native South Africa. Pinotage has also been planted in New Zealand and Zimbabwe, with other wine growing nations such as Switzerland, Germany, the US, Israel and Brazil.
