The municipality of Punata is also known as the "Pearl of the Valley", has tourist attractions such as the San Juan Bautista temple which was declared a National Monument for the important religious treasures that guarded and its colonial background, as well as the old hacienda Sivingani is a majestic building.

Until May 18, 1838, Punata was a canton of the German Jordán province; on that date, it was elevated to the rank of Villa by Supreme Decree of Andrés de Santa Cruz and on January 4, 1872 it was constituted as a Province initially covering what is now the Arani province.
