The national flag was created during the reign of the President of the Republic, Mr. José María Medina, on February 16, 1866, when the National Congress issued Legislative Decree No. 7. But that was on May 23, 1995. The National Congress of Honduras, presided over by Engineer Carlos Roberto Flores, approved Legislative Decree no. 84-95, which officially proclaims September 1 of each year as National Flag Day of Honduras.
The national flag of Honduras consists of three horizontal stripes of equal size, two turquoise blue and a central white with five stars, which represent the five countries that formed the old Central American federation and the ideal of a Central American union.
The blue stripes symbolize the sky of our nation and the importance of the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans that wash the coasts. The white stripes symbolize national patriotism, purity, integrity, faith, obedience and peace.
