Leader of the insurgency born in Valladolid, Michoacán. From 1779 to 1790 he worked on the sugarcane plantation of Tahuejo, in Apatzingán, perhaps as a clerk or accountant. In 1790 he entered the Colegio de San Nicolás Obispo, in Valladolid, where he studied Latin grammar and rhetoric, philosophy, and morals. In the Tridentine Seminary of that city, he studied moral theology and philosophy in 1795.
In 1810, during the war of independence, he joined the ranks of Miguel Hidalgo, who appointed him chief of the insurgents in southern Mexico, entrusting him with the capture of Acapulco. After his death in 1811, Morelos conquered most of the south and center of the country, to finally take Oaxaca.
